How Does The Treatment Work?
The use of Botulinum Toxin Type A (anti-wrinkle injection) can provide a person relief from the pain caused by Bruxism as it can stop the involuntary movement of their jaw as the Botulinum toxin weakens the muscle Masseter when it is injected in small doses. However, voluntary movement such as eating and facial expressions is not at all effected by this procedure.
Bruxism is a technical term for someone who involuntarily grinds and clenches their teeth, which can cause a person to have pain in their jaw but also to suffer from headaches in and around the temple area but also to suffer from migraines. Many people experience Bruxism at night time and usually get offered a mouth guard to wear to help prevent the wear and tear of their teeth.
Although this is not a cure for Bruxism it can help relieve any pain that the symptoms may cause, unlike the use of a nightguard. The treatment can last from 3-4 months, but this can vary from person to person.
